The Association of Banks in Israel was founded in 1959 as an overseeing organization for all commercial, mortgage and investment banks. Established by members of the banking sector, the association's goal is topromote effective dialogue with legislative branches, as well as public andprivate institutions, regarding all matters of banking. Its members include theIsraeli Bank Groups, independent banks and foreign banks operating in Israel. Following the merging and acquisition of banking institutions, the official listof association members was revised and to date it is comprised of a total of 18banks, including two mortgage banks and two foreign banks with branches inIsrael (Citibank and HSBC). Along with commercial banks with specific mortgagedepartments, the associated mortgage banks operate within a sectioned frameworkdealing with this specific area of banking.
Operating as non-profit organization, the association's key objective is to assist in the promotion of banking matters. Activities focusupon regulatory and economic areas as well as legal representation in dealingwith government agencies, the Knesset, the Bank of Israel, the Stock ExchangeAuthority, the Anti-trust Authority and others. In addition, the associationprovides consumer education through the distribution of relevant information andconducts routine research projects on various banking issues. Representation isalso offered to the banking sector in matters related to the Bureau ofCoordination of Economic Organizations and equivalent international forums.
Activities in the field of regulations are related to the various types of governmental statutes and directives that affect the bankingsystem, such as proposed laws, statutes, ordinances, court orders and otherregulations with direct implications on banking operations. The associationrepresents banking positions on a variety of subjects, initiates activitiesrelated to these areas and also conducts legal hearings on matters that arerelevant to the operations of the banking system.
Along with its involvement in legislative and regulatory matters, the association also presents the positions of the banking sector tothe media and to public opinion factors, as well as informing the public. Amongother avenues, information is channeled by means of the association's websitewith its routine updates regarding pertinent matters related to banking inIsrael. The association's two publications also contribute to the public'sknowledge and awareness of the banking scene: "The Banking Quarterly", dealingwith the research and analysis of various economic issues related to financialmarkets, and "Banking", focusing on pertinent issues from the world of bankingand capital markets. This magazine is intended for government and regulatoryexecutives as well as for the heads of the banking and business community. Inaddition, the association organizes congresses and conferences dealing withbanking and capital markets.
Research activities conducted by the association include economic opinions, analysis of banking trends, international comparisons, thepublishing of routine surveys in the field of banking and more. Among its manyactivities, the association also represents the Israeli Banking System indealing with relevant institutions abroad by maintaining contacts with foreignbanking associations as well as with regulatory institutions.
The Association of Banks in Israel believes that the promotion of the banking sector's interests eventually contributes to the entirepopulation of consumers of banking services in Israel. In its essence, theassociation focuses on an overall array of subjects that are not necessaryfinancial in nature, as financial activities are clearly the matters of eachindividual bank.
The General Assembly, comprised of representatives from each of the member banks, serves as the association's highest institution. As a rule, the General Assembly meets once a year, although certain situations cannecessitate the calling of a special meeting. Activities are outlined by theExecutive Committee, a forum comprised of the Heads of most of the commercialbanks and the Chair of the sector of banks operating in the field of mortgages. The professional staff of the association operates within a framework of threedepartments of expertise that coordinate the main areas of activities: The LegalConsultation, Regulatory and Legislative Department; The Research Department; and the External Affairs and Public Relations Department.

Born in Israel (1944); holds a BA degree in Economics and Political Science and MA degree in Economics, both from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Served in several key positions at the civil service, as well as on the private sector and on the capital market - among them Director of Budget Department at the Ministry of Finance and Director General of the Ministry, Chairman at Bank Mizrahi and Yes company, and head of the commission for the Ministry of Defense budget examination. In addition Brodet held many public positions, in part as an outsider director in public companies, and in part in the academy. Since July 2010 he is the Chairman of Bank Leumi

Moshe Pearl – CEO of the Association of Banks in Israel
Born in Israel (1960); received his Masters Degree from the TelAviv University School of Business Management. Among his former positions: theEconomic Editor of the daily newspaper "Ma'ariv", editor and broadcaster of theprogram "Economic Plan" on the Israeli Army Radio Station and economiccommentator for Israeli TV Channel 10. He is currently a member of the friendsof Tel-Aviv University Association and is the author of the bestseller "WithOpened Eyes", Keter Publishing.
